AquaDry MMS

AquaDry Moisture Management System (MMS) is the name used exclusively by Craghoppers for their waterproof, windproof and breathable fabrics. Shell, Mid and Base layers interact to form an integrated clothing system providing the optimum comfort levels.

AquaDry Shell garments are all Waterproof, Windproof, and Breathable. They protect the underlying mid and base layers from wind and moisture as well as allowing perspiration to escape. This effect is achieved by either a Hydrophilic or Hydrophobic treatment depending on the garment's intended use and style.

Fabrics using the Hydrophilic principle transmit water vapour (perspiration) away from the body to the outer surface of the garment along a chain of water-attracting molecules. This one-way transmission occurs due to the temperature differential between the inside and exterior of the garment. The effect is enhanced by a water-repellent outer-fabric finish.

Hydrophobic AquaDry fabrics work using either microporous coatings or membranes. Pores in these treatments are small enough to be impermeable to rain yet still allow perspiration to escape. The result is a fully waterproof and breathable garment.

The unique use of Hydrophobic and Hydrophilic AquaDry principles allows Craghoppers to provide a better and wider range of exterior fabrics and shell styles.

All waterproof/breathable systems work best if you take into account the following factors:

1. To optimise breathability, perspiration should reach the shell as quickly as possible. This is best achieved by garments that wick moisture away from the body.

2. Washing and cool ironing a garment can help to replenish its properties (N.B. always read the garments own instructions).

3. Regular re-spraying of the outer fabric with a good water repellent spray will help maintain its level of performance.

AquaDry mid garments function as the insulating layer, trapping as much body heat as possible. The best insulator is air, thus the best fabrics have an open-knitted construction to create as many air spaces as possible. Manufactured from non-absorbent high performance fleece such as Polartec 200, these fabrics also wick body moisture away from the underlying layer to the shell layer. Ensuring you stay warm and dry.

AquaDry base layer clothing has all the advantages of traditional thermal underwear, yet is also designed to wick body moisture away from the skin to the next clothing layer. In order to function properly, base layer garments are manufactured from non-absorbent knitted fabrics and should be close-fitting.

Although AquaDry garments operate best as an integrated system they are versatile enough to work with other manufacturers' garments. For optimum performance, however, Craghoppers recommend that you should use the garments as part of a layering system.
